Hybrid materials are materials containing two distinct moieties coupled together. At the molecular scale, normally one of these components is inorganic and the other one is organic. Such coupling is believed to provide synergistic effects from the properties of both the coupled components. In addition to our work on nanocomposites of inorganic sulphides and oxides, we have prepared also several hybrids made of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) cages. In this talk, we illustrate how this nanometer-sized cage can be used in making POSS-monomer, -oligomers, -polymers, etc hybrids. We illustrate with these examples our approaches in modifying materials properties by coupling these organic moieties with a small inorganic component.
