Abstract: To design and develop practical asymmetric syntheses of complex drug substances represents critically important activities in process research. Practical asymmetric syntheses of a number of complex drug substances will be presented to illustrate our efforts to support these core activities. The presentation will focus on the definition of synthetic strategies, execution of key transformations and development of novel synthetic methodologies that is generally useful to synthetic chemists.
Dr. Chengyi Chen graduated from the chemistry department of Xiamen University in 1984. He did his graduate study under the supervision of Professor David J. Hart at Ohio State University and received his Ph.D. degree in 1990. He next joined the Merck & Co. at Rahway, NJ, where he spent 24 years focusing on the process development of drug substances. He was promoted to the Senior Principal Scientist and acted as a scientific lead in chemistry project and scientific advisor for process chemistry for his outstanding performance at Merck. Dr. Chen has published over 80 publications/patents and has been invited to give over 60 presentations in organic chemistry conferences and universities.
