Abstract:
Controlled radical polymerization, so-called living radical polymerization (LRP), has attracted growing attention as a powerful method for synthesizing well-defined, low-polydispersity polymers. The seminar will introduce a new family of LRP using organic catalysts, which we recently developed. It is the first LRP using non-metal catalysts and is based on a new mechanism in LRP. The catalysts include inexpensive organic molecules such as amines, phosphines, and even non-toxic vitamins. This polymerization is applicable to a variety of monomers and polymer structures. This polymerization is also unique in that it can be induced by not only thermal heating but also photo-irradiation in a wide range of wavelength (350-750 nm). The facile operation and accessibility to a large variety of polymer designs are greatly beneficial in a variety of applications. The chemistry of this polymerization and some applications, e.g., application to polymer brush materials and their fascinating properties, will be presented.
