Weiping Tang graduated from the chemistry department of Peking University in 1997. In that same year, he began graduate study at New York University and received his Masters degree in 1999. He moved to Stanford University in the laboratories of Professor B. M. Trost. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in 2005, he joined the group of Professor S. L. Schreiber at Harvard University as a postdoctoral associate. In 2007, he started his independent research career in the School of Pharmacy, University of Wisconsin-Madison as an assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor in 2013.

His research interests have involved the development of stereoselective and efficient synthetic methodologies, synthesis of biologically active natural products, and rational design of chemical probes for cell biology.

Professor Tang has published over 30 publications in top research journals including JACS, ACIE, ChemSci through his independent research in University of Wisconsin-Madison.  He is the recipient of Thieme Synlett/Synthesis Journal Award (2010) and Amgen Young Investigator Award (2011).
